Effective vs. flat-rate method

Effective method

Deducts input VAT from output VAT. Correct for any business. Required for companies with significant input tax (capital goods, supplies). Monthly or quarterly filing with ESTV.

Flat-rate (Saldosteuersatz)

Applies a fixed industry-specific rate to gross turnover — simpler and often cheaper for service companies. Available under CHF 5,005,000 turnover. We calculate whether the switch saves you money.

Swiss VAT — your questions

Registration is mandatory when worldwide turnover from taxable supplies reaches CHF 100,000 per calendar year. The obligation applies to Swiss companies and to foreign companies supplying goods or services in Switzerland. You must register within 30 days of exceeding the threshold. Retroactive liability applies from the date the threshold was crossed — not from the date of registration — so late registration incurs back VAT. Voluntary registration below the threshold is also available: useful when you have significant input VAT to reclaim on capital expenditure or startup costs. We monitor your turnover and notify you when registration is approaching. Registration with the ESTV typically takes 2–4 weeks.
The standard VAT rate in Switzerland (MWST) is 8.1% as of 1 January 2024, following the rate increase approved by Swiss voters in November 2022 to fund the AHV pension system. Reduced rates apply to specific categories: 2.6% for essentials including food, non-alcoholic beverages, books, newspapers, and medicines; 3.8% for accommodation and hotel services. Exports of goods and cross-border services are zero-rated. Switzerland is not an EU member and does not apply EU VAT rules — the Swiss MWST Act (MWSTG) governs all domestic VAT. If you supply digital services to Swiss consumers, you may also be subject to MWST regardless of where you are established.
The effective method requires you to deduct actual input VAT from output VAT and remit the difference to the ESTV. This is accurate but requires complete bookkeeping of all VAT-coded transactions. The flat-rate method (Saldosteuersatz) applies a fixed industry-specific rate to gross turnover — rates range from 0.1% to 6.5% depending on your sector. It is available to companies with annual turnover below CHF 5,005,000 and a tax liability below CHF 103,000. The flat-rate method reduces administration but may cost more if your actual input VAT is high. We run both calculations for your specific revenue and cost profile before you commit to a method. Switching between methods requires ESTV approval and is permitted every 3 years.
Foreign companies without a Swiss establishment must register for Swiss VAT and appoint a fiscal representative (Fiskalvertreter) domiciled in Switzerland if their worldwide turnover from Swiss taxable supplies exceeds CHF 100,000 per year. The fiscal representative is jointly liable for your VAT obligations and handles all ESTV correspondence. Distance selling of goods to Swiss consumers may also trigger registration at lower thresholds. Since 1 January 2025, foreign platforms facilitating sales to Swiss consumers are liable for MWST on those transactions. Zürich Treuhand Hive acts as fiscal representative for foreign companies across multiple sectors — e-commerce, SaaS, professional services, and manufacturing. We prepare all quarterly returns in German and liaise directly with the ESTV on your behalf.
